Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries is a strategic agency funded by the UK Government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport established in April 2000. Our objectives are to:

  • Provide strategic leadership and promote change,
  • Act as an authoritative advocate and champion for our sector
  • Advise Government and the sector on best practice and the delivery of specific objectives

Specific tasks being carried out by Resource to improve public access and to raise the quality of services include:

  • Reporting on the future of Regional museums in England
  • Research to demonstrate the impact of museums, archives and libraries on key Government agendas
  • Identify what needs to be done to improve the quality of leadership across the sector
  • The development of national standards measuring the quality of services provided by museums, archives and libraries
  • The management and development of the People's Network project, which will connect all the UK's public libraries to the World Wide Web by 2002, enable training for all public librarians and create a wide range of digital content
