Actions already under
way in the Secretary of State for Culture :
- Bibliographica1 items. Using microfilm and slides, Spain's Nationa1
Library made an experience in digitising over 2,000,000 images of
maps from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, prints, incunabula
and periodicals. In addition, under the name "Memory of Spain",
the following digitisation programmes have already been carried
out: ADMYTE "Digital archives of manuscripts and texts" published
on CD-ROM contains 63 incunabula; Heráldica has digitised the main
repertories of heraldry records and genea10gy; the Clásicos Tavera
project has digitised 5,000 works from the 18th to the 20th centuries
of basic importance for the history of relationships on the Iberian
Peninsula and Latin America; on the occasion of the 250th anniversary
of the birth of the artist, the Estampas de Goya collection digitised
the drawings and engravings by Goya held in the National Library;
in Tesoros de la Biblioteca Nacional, the National Library has begun
the publication on CD-ROM of the digitised text of some of the Library's
unique treasures: Cantar de Mio Cid, El libro de los gorrones, Beato
de Liébana, etc.

Archive documents. The Archivo General de lndias has more than 11,000,000
digitised images of documents relating to the exploration and colonization
of the Americas. There are also large-scale digitisation projects
under way in the large state archives: the Nationa1 Historic Archive,
the Archive of the Crown of Arag6n, the Genera1 Archive of the Civil
War, the General Archive at Simancas, the Archive of the Royal Chancery
at Val1adolid and the Provincial Historic Archive of Alava. These
archives are expected to digitise 16,880,000 images.

Chattels of historic significance. The Nationa1 Prado Museum, the
Queen Sofia National Museum and Art Centre, the Nationa1 Science
and Technology Museum have already digitised their h01dings on the
basis of photographs of their works. The National Archaeological
Museum has digitised 7,000 objects contained in the museum.

Photographic archives. The main collections of photos held by the
Spanish Historic Heritage Institute have been digitised in over
70,000 images.
- Film archives. The Spanish Film Library contains more than 1,500
digital videos with film mliteria1 prior to 1943 and the journal
"Imagenes" (Images) with items from Spain's filmed news
bul1etins known as NO-DO.

Real Estate of Cultural Interest in Spanish Heritage. The Directorate-Geneta1
for Fine Art reporting to the Secretary of State for Culture has
drawn up a Register of Real Estate of Cultural Interest in Spanish
Heritage, currently comprising 13.459 properties; of which 14,000
digitised images ate available.
