"0s and 1s are not enough: Infusing digital heritage Web sites with the life of a culture"

ABSTRACT

Digitisation is a prerequisite to the preservation of cultural memory on the World Wide Web. It is necessary but not sufficient. In order for digitized objects to take on meaning outside of their local community, they must be inserted into a system of relationships, a semantic web of individual lives, cultural movements, ideas and emotions. This presentation will analyze and critique the new Project Minerva guidelines on quality for cultural web sites, and present examples of web sites from around the world that act as effective tools for communicating cultural memory in its most holistic sense.
